We reserve the right to refuse any link that is deemed offensive, or not horse related. If a link is refused, you will be notified immediately by email, and are under no obligation to include our link on your site.

What's a 'Web Ring'?

Web Rings are a technique used by web sites to boost their relevance ranking by search engines. I know this may sound confusing, but here’s an example. Let’s say you have a web site on Horses. Now let’s say someone goes to google.com and searches for 'horses'. Google will come back with a list of all the web sites containing horses, which it knows about. Your web site might be on the first page or two of this listing, or it might be on page number 2,456. It all depends on how Google ranks the relevance of your page to the subject of horses.

I know people who are (let's say dedicated) to surfing the web, but even the most die-hard of these people will get bored before they get to page 2,456. So if you want people to see your web site, you have to get it on the first couple of pages. One way search engines determine the relevance ranking of your web page, is by looking at how many other sites, with the same subject, have links to your web page. The search engines assume that the more 'horse' pages that have links to your site, then the more 'horse' related content you must have on your site.

So to keep the search engines happy (and to get web pages noticed) web sites use 'Web Rings', which is really just a list of links to other websites with the same subject. A list of links to other sites won't raise the ranking of your own site on its own. However, if you require anyone posting a link on your site, to also post a link for you on theirs, then it helps everyone out, and it helps get both sites noticed by the search engines.
